Bucks County Commissioners Meet with Coalition of Senior Communities

This week, the Bucks County Commissioners met with approximately 25 members of the Bucks County Coalition of Senior Communities to provide an update on activities happening throughout county government. The meeting was hosted at Legacy Oaks, an over-55 community in Warrington. Fifteen communities and over 7,000 members are represented by the coalition.

Among the topics discussed included an overview of structure and services provided by the county. Delivering the update was Commissioner Chairman Charles H. Martin, who also trumpeted Bucks County’s highest bond rating in 20 years, Aa1 from Moody’s Investor Service. “Moody’s attributed the increase to solid fiscal stability and a strong management team, both of which we are very proud,” the chairman noted. In addition, Martin reminded participants of Governor Rendell’s commitment to undertake a statewide approach to county tax reform, a move supported by the commissioners and a topic of interest to all in attendance.

In his opening remarks, Commissioner James F. Cawley, Esq., applauded the group for organizing and speaking with one voice. The seniors then received an update on the myriad capital projects the county is undergoing, such as the construction of new district courts, a new morgue and crime lab, a new government services center for upper Bucks, and a new parking garage and justice center. “ Bucks County has reached an apex in terms of the number of capital projects being undertaken,” he told the group. Cawley also shared information on open space and agricultural preservation programs.

County Commissioner Sandra A. Miller provided participants with a breakdown of programs the Health and Human Services Division provides to Bucks Countians every day. Among them, she highlighted Children and Youth, Mental Health and Mental Retardation, the Bucks County Health Department, and the Area Agency on Aging, also known as “triple-A.” “The paragon of Health and Human Services is Neshaminy Manor, a 360-bed state-of the-art nursing facility that is at full capacity virtually 100 percent of the time,” Miller shared.

Following each of their presentations, the commissioners opened up the floor to the participants, who posed questions regarding: municipalities and county work together in order to further the open space initiative; the status of the waterfront project; and transportation for senior citizens around the county.

Additionally, Martin, Cawley and Miller extended an invitation to the seniors to tour the courthouse and prison. Anyone interested in these or other topics can view various pages throughout this site.
