Commissioners Re-Open Newtown Borough’s Barclay St. Bridge During Morning Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
July 31st, 2007
The Bucks County Board of Commissioners, acting swiftly to return county-owned Bridge No. 89, or the Barclay St. bridge – which spans the Newtown Creek from Newtown Borough to Newtown Twp. – re-opened the facility this morning with assistance from local elected officials, law-enforcement personnel and concerned citizens.
“We are extremely pleased to have this bridge back in operation,” Chairman Charles H. Martin said after a vintage, 1918 Model-T Ford convertible became the first vehicle to cross the reinforced deck. “It represents an important part of Newtown’s transportation grid.”
The bridge contractor, Kurt Federico of Professional Construction, Inc., repaired the decking with a hick apron of concrete reinforced with steel. The structure also includes guard rails made of Corlen, a material that gradually rusts to blend in with its natural surroundings.
Joining Martin, and fellow Commissioners James F. Cawley and Sandra A. Miller were Newtown Borough Mayor Glenn Hains, Council Vice-President Rand Jaslow, Police Chief Anthony Wojciechowski, Newtown Twp. Supervisor Gerry Schenkman, county Acting Director of Public Works/Executive Director of Parks and Recreation Bill Mitchell and Paul Cardie of Carroll Engineering.
